Anne-Sophie Berting2002
I’m a bookbinder and graphic designer currently studying at ArtEZ University of the Arts. I’m particularly interested in book design, printed matter, archiving, bookbinding and have a deep passion for traditional crafts. I
enjoy a collaborative creative process. My work is driven by a commitment to craftsmanship, with a keen eye for detail, colour combinations and clarity of design. Whether it’s crafting custom books, designing layouts, or preserving the beauty of traditional techniques, my goal is always to produce work that is both functional and visually compelling.

Double-sided poster design shining light on the issue of local printing houses disappearing resulting in knowledge and craftsmanship being lost.
Over the past few years, local printing houses across the Netherlands have slowly been disappearing. Many are being bought out or replaced by larger printing companies. Because of this shift, craftsmanship and knowledge is being lost.
Together with Isabel van de Stadt we designed a poster to shine light on this issue. Our poster focuses on the craftsmanship and the beauty of process. By using repetition and tactility within the design we want to represent the rhythm and dedication of specialised printing houses. The images are individual frames taken from a video that was taken at a local printing house. In each frame we isolated the wheel bearings and highlighted them using silver “foil”. The pattern created by the bearings is mirrored on the back of the poster and has been intertwined with our call to action.
We are happy to announce that our poster design was chosen by NPN Printing to be printed and distributed. More information will follow when production has started.

The Poison Book Project Database created by The Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library and the University of Delaware, designed and bound into a double hardcover book.
This book contains the entire database of the Poison Book Project conducted by the University of Delaware and The Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library. The database contains a list of 267 titles of books that contain arsenic. The book is divided into 6 chapters that contain articles, essays and interviews that offer insight into the use, invention and dangers of arsenic. These chapters are printed on green paper. The chapters printed on white pages are divided into 5 categories of arsenical materials that are found in or on these books.
Each page displays one book in the database and contains information on the date it was published, the title, author, publisher, arsenical material and its OCLC number. The title, author and publisher are displayed inside a green rectangle that is a 1:2 ratio to the measurements of the actual book it is referencing.
Some pages contain missing information such as author or publisher. In this case the missing information is marked with a green fingerprint. The fingerprints on these pages are done by hand using green ink.
The book is bound using a double hardcover technique. Showing off two, two-tone linnen colours and hiding a historical print inside the cover, only visible when prying open the binding. Gold and green hand-sewn headbands adorn the top and bottom of the book, it’s pattern corresponding to the coloured chapters. The cover and spine are screenprinted in gold ink. The cover shows off a golden rectangle that is a 1:2 ratio in measurements of the binding. The book is housed in a slipcase with corresponding colour-scheme.

Illuminated manuscripts (redesign)

BINDING: Anne-Sophie Berting
PRINTING: Laserprint

DIMENSIONS: 200mm x 280mm x 35mm
MATERIAL: linnen, flax, parchment and
acrylic paint
The Project Gutenberg e-Book of Illuminated Manuscripts written by John William Bradley, redesigned using 1 font and 1 font size.
The redesign of the book was inspired by the beautiful illuminated manuscripts produced throughout history. The restriction of 1 font 1 size resulted in various creative decisions. Using white space and capital letters the impression of an illuminated letter was created. Sub- and superscript was used for footnotes and notes. Black borders were used in place of illumination and a red-green-blue color scheme was created based on medieval use of color.
The book is bound using a Gothic-style binding. I took liberty from the traditional way of binding when it came to the cover and spine to create a more stripped down version to match the content of the book. The book is bound using red linnen thread (18/3) and is sewn onto flax cords. Handmade headbands adorn the top and bottom of the spine, made using the same linnen thread in red and blue as was used for the binding. The spine is covered in strips of parchment as a nod to the use of parchment and vellum in the art of illumination. The front and back of the book are covered in black linnen with an embossing of the title centered on the front cover.

PRINTING: Laserprint
IMAGES: Rijksmuseum digital archive
PAPER: ColourCopy Gloss 250gsm
TYPEFACE:
DIMENSIONS: 140mm x 110mm x 58mm
MATERIAL: Shirting, cotton, watercolour, vinylA carefully curated collection of 93 faience plates from the Rijksmuseum digital archive. All hand-painted, glazed and fired in Delft, The Netherlands.
For this collection I chose to look at Delftware plates made in Delft, The Netherlands. My choice was mainly inspired by my interest in traditional craft and my mothers collection of Spode tableware. I curated a collection of 93 faience plates which I then ordered based on the amount of blue glaze that is used on the plates.
The book consists of 3 chapters. The first chapter of the book shows full-page spreads of the imagery painted on the plate. The second chapter shows mosaic-style spreads highlighting the smaller details in each of the plates. The third and final chapter of the book is an index of all plates featured in the book. The index contains information on the production of each plate. Mentioned are: page-number, description, production date, painting technique and dimensions.

A platform which facilitates a place for students to sell their work and reach a wider audience.
PAPERJAM is a platform I created in collaboration with Julia Verweij (and previously also with Joshua van Blijderveen). This project started from a mutual excitement of wanting to sell our work and wanting to start building a network for ourselves. We created a place where our fellow students and us could sell their work to a wider audience. We organised a market during the ArtEZ Open Day (2024) at which we sold our own work as well as that of 21 fellow students.
This year we are continuing the PAPERJAM project but we are taking it online!

DIMENSIONS: 195mm x 128mm X 10mm
Collaborative project with fellow students. Together with 3 other students we decided to create a book to improve our book design and curatorial skills. The subject of doors was chosen based on a mutual interest.
The book is made up of three sections. Each section showcases a collection of doors from a set of European countries; The Netherlands, Spain, United Kingdom and Belgium. The first section features a collection of images of doors found in various European digital archives. The second section is a collection of screenshots of doors we made by browsing Google Maps and the third section consists of images we have made ourselves in these countries. The design of the book is based on 2 grid systems which are randomised for every page. Throughout the book short statements and quotes are placed which refer to the meaning or function of doors. On several pages we made use of the thin paper and printed the text backwards. This way the reader can only read the text by holding the book up to the light and reading through the paper, to play with the illusion of open and closed.
The binding is a leporello style binding with 3 separate booklets attached in the valley-folds. This leporello style binding results in the book being able to open and unfold in a variety of different ways, creating the feeling of opening and closing doors.
Mimeograph print
DATE: February 2023
DESIGN: Anne-Sophie Berting
PRINTING: Mimeograph
SIZE: 330mm x 229mm
A mimeograph print made a one-day workshop given by Erwin Blok. Using 4 different mimeograph presses I created a cascading gradient.
I was inspired by the old machinery and hands-on technique used to be able to make these types of print. I wanted to juxtapose the old technique with a timeless design and decided to go for a geometric cascading gradient. Erwin Blok helped turn the 4 layers of gradient into 4 different Riso masters. We then ran a stack of paper through 4 different mimeographs presses to layer the individual colours of ink onto each other.

DIMENSIONS: 420mm x 297mm x 4mm
MATERIAL: Linnen, paper
A set of 29 pictures that explore the relation between abstract art and nature.
The 29 photographs were inspired by contemporary color-field paintings from the abstract art movement, combined with the documenting process of biology field research. The colour fields were archived by using coloured paper which eludes to the way plants are documented in scientific research. By using the coloured sheets as a background for the flora a play between the abstract and natural was created. The depth of the flora and the overlapping of shadows resulted in a photograph that looks like you could almost reach into it and smell the flowers.
The photographs were printed on semi-transparent paper to layer shapes and colours. All photo’s are sized so the coloured sheet is in its original A4 format. The cover, title page and colophon are screenprinted in white. The cover design is based on the semi-transparency of the paper resulting in layered shapes of the flora.

Research project about traditional crafts that are featured in the Heritage Crafts Association
“Red List”.
A research project that was born out of my passion for traditional crafts. The book contains interviews with 9 craftsmen that are part of the HCA (Heritage Crafts Association). These interviews shed light on their perspective on the decline of traditional crafts. Each craftsperson was asked to fill in the same questionnaire. Each of their respective chapters starts with a description of the craft and an explanation of its decline. This description is followed by an introduction of the craftsperson, how long they have been in business and tells their background. The interviews are collected in this book each in their own colour-coded chapters. The book is hand-bound as a linnen hardcover. The title on the front cover and the colours on the back cover are heat pressed with vinyl.
